Celebrating National Pet Week 2022

April 8, 2022

National Pet Week is right around the corner, so it's time to celebrate! While we're sure you celebrate your pet all day every day, National Pet Week is the perfect excuse to give your fur babies a little extra love. National Pet Week is observed every year during the first week of May.

The American Veterinary Association (AMVA) created National Pet Week in 1981 to celebrate the joy pets bring us and spread awareness of proper pet care. Giving your pet new treats and toys is one thing, but the AMVA wants to encourage owners to be doing all they can to ensure their pets live long happy lives. so, let's look at what National Pet Week entails and ways you can celebrate with your furry family members!

National Pet Week Themes

If you're wondering how to celebrate National Pet Week, the AMVA has broken it down into daily themes.

Sunday: Commit

When it comes to choosing a pet, the options can be overwhelming. It's important to keep in mind that pet ownership is a lifelong commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Take your lifestyle, living situation, and family type into consideration when choosing a new furry friend. Consider visiting a shelter during National Pet Week if you've been planning on bringing a new pet home!

Monday: Socialize

What better way to celebrate National Pet Week than getting out to the dog park? Monday's theme focuses on the importance of socialization and making sure your pets are getting plenty of it.

Tuesday: Nutrition and Exercise

Running with the theme of Monday's socialization, Tuesday is all about nutrition and exercise. According to the AMVA, 52.7% of dogs and 27.9% of cats in the US are overweight. It may seem great to spoil your little ones with as many treats as they want during National Pet Week, but be sure they are healthy! For dogs, take them out on a walk or run. For cats, you could treat them to some new playtime toys that encourage exercise from Petmate!

Wednesday: Don't Skip the Vet

The AMVA cannot stress enough how important taking your pets to the vet is. That's half the reason why National Pet Week was started! Taking your pet to the vet is not only important when they're sick. Regular checkups will help keep your pet healthy and help detect problems before they arise. Not only is it great for your pet, but it's also great for your wallet to avoid costly emergency visits if there is an issue later on. If it's been a while, call your vet and schedule a regular checkup today.

Thursday: Traveling with your Pet

Even if your pet loves to hit the open road, traveling with them requires proper planning. It's important to figure out exactly what you need before traveling. Travel requires accessories, of course, and Petmate has everything you need from carriers to collapsable water bowls.

Friday: Emergency Awareness

There is nothing scarier than an emergency involving your pet. When you take on the responsibility of pet ownership, you're committing to taking care of them even when an emergency happens. Talk to your vet or other animal professionals for information on being prepared for a pet emergency, and have an emergency vet office number saved on your phone.

Saturday: Plan for a Lifetime

Due to medical advances, our pets are living longer than they ever have before! More time with our furry family members is exactly what the doctor ordered! For them to live their best lives as senior pets, they will need extra love and care. Talk to your vet about what you can do to prepare for your pet's life as they age, and take time to appreciate the moments you have with them now.

Conclusion

National Pet Week is an excellent time to remember that your pets need just as much care as humans do. Take them to the park, get them a new toy, and get a checkup at the vet every year! Happy National Pet Week to all the pets out there!
