How to Pick the Right Shelter for your Dog

Petmate Academy

January 24, 2017

Enhancing your pet’s quality of life starts with his home. At Petmate®, we offer a diverse selection of shelters, including the Aspen Pet® line, to ensure that your precious pooch is protected from the elements. And guess what? Our shelters never need painting, and are rot and mold resistant! What more could you ask for?

Questions you should ask yourself prior to purchasing a shelter:

1. How to size your dog correctly?

2. Do you want a dog house for indoor or outdoor use?

3. What type of weather will the house be used in?

To size your dog house correctly:

  • Be sure your dog can stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably in the house.
  • If the shelter is too big, he won’t stay warm enough.
  • If the shelter is too small, your dog won’t be comfortable in his house.

The most common styles of dog houses we offer include the traditional barn-style plastic shelters and the dome (igloo) style plastic shelters.

Traditional Barn Style Plastic Shelters:

  • Imitates traditional barns with attractive roofline adaptations of wood and shingle textures.
  • Features door overhangs that help keep out rain and divert it away from the entry.
  • Have raised floors with moats along the walls so that liquid drains off to the sides.
  • Best suited for milder climates outdoors, but is ideal for indoor use as well.
  • Are built with rear vents to keep the air inside fresh.
  • Assemble with a quick, easy, snap-together design. No tools required.

If this type of shelter appeals to you, take a look at our Aspen Pet Petbarn®.

Dome (igloo) Style Plastic Shelters:

  • Designed to be stable in gusty, windy areas.
  • Sloughs off snow and rain while reflecting warmth back down to the pet.
  • Features heavy-duty structural foam making them extremely strong.
  • Have raised floors with moats along the walls so that liquid drains off to the sides.
  • Keeps pets warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
  • Assemble with a quick, easy, snap-together design. No tools required.
