Tips for keeping your dog safe on a hot summer day

As the summer sun shines bright, it’s essential for pet owners to be vigilant about their furry companions’ well-being and hydration. Dogs are highly susceptible to heat-related illnesses and can suffer from dehydration, heatstroke, and burned paw pads. However, with proper care and attention, we can ensure our four-legged friends stay cool and comfortable throughout the hot summer months. Here are some practical tips to keep your pup safe and happy during the scorching season.

Just like us, dogs need to stay hydrated in the heat. Always ensure that your dog has access to fresh, cool water throughout the day. Consider carrying a portable Chuckit! Hydro Travel Dog Bowl or a Petmate Replendish To Go on walks or outings. If you notice signs of dehydration such as lethargy, dry gums, or excessive panting, take a break and offer your pup some water immediately.

The sun is at its hottest during midday. Plan your outdoor activities, walks, and exercise sessions during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings. Asphalt and concrete can get scorching and burn your dog’s paw pads, so test the surface with your hand before taking your pup for a walk.

Create a cool environment. Make sure your home is a cool haven for your dog during summer with plenty of fresh drinking water always available. Keep a Gravity Waterer on hand such as the PetFusion H2O 2.5 Gallon Gravity Pet Water Dispenser or an automatic water fountain like the Petmate Deluxe Fresh Flow Pet Water Fountain. Provide ample shade in your yard, and if your dog stays outdoors, invest in a shaded area or a doghouse that allows proper ventilation such as the Petmate Husky Dog House. Inside, you can use fans or air conditioning to keep the temperature down.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked open, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket within minutes. On a warm day, it can quickly become a death trap for your pet. Never leave your pet unattended in a car, even for a short time.

Consider using a cooling towel for your pup. This will keep your dog’s body temperature down during walks or outdoor play. Simply take a small wet towel and place it in the freezer for a few minutes, then wrap your dog in it or lie on it to cool off.

Supervised Swimming

Swimming is an excellent way for dogs to cool down. If your pup enjoys the water, consider taking them to a dog-friendly beach or a shallow pool. However, always supervise them while swimming, and be cautious of strong currents and unfamiliar bodies of water. Consider toys from Chuckit!  Amphibious Fetch Toys line is designed specifically for water use to help keep your dog stimulated while in the water.

Avoid intense exercise during hot weather. Dogs can easily overheat, so keep activities low-key and avoid strenuous play during peak temperatures. Opt for mentally stimulating games or indoor play sessions using indoor toys from Chuckit! Indoor Fetch Toy line.

Grooming matters. Regular grooming is crucial during summer. Brushing your dog with quality grooming tools from the JW® GripSoft® line helps remove excess fur and reduces the risk of overheating. However, avoid shaving double-coated breeds, as their fur provides insulation against both heat and cold.

By following these practical tips you can create a safe environment for your pet during the hot summer months. Remember, your dog’s well-being is in your hands, and with a little extra care and attention, you can ensure they stay cool, hydrated, and healthy all season long. Enjoy the summer with your companion and make cherished memories together!
