Pet Hydration: Tips On How To Keep Your Pet Hydrated

Petmate Academy

June 3, 2019

July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month – a time to show pet owners the importance of proper hydration in your pet’s life.  Just like a human, your pet’s body will not be able to function as it’s supposed to without water. Knowing that it is important for your pet to be hydrated is one thing, but keeping them hydrated is another thing! Here are some tips for keeping your pet healthy and hydrated.

  1. Know the signs of dehydration

Knowing the signs of when your pet is dehydrated can save your pet from getting sick.  Common signs include:

  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Loss of energy
  • Excessive panting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sunken, dry eyes
  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Loss of skin elasticity

If you suspect your pet is dehydrated contact your vet immediately.

  1. Know how much water your pet needs

Pets should be getting at least one ounce of water for each pound of body weight.  Depending on other factors such as the temperature and your pet’s activity levels, your pet may need more water.  Though it is important to watch your pet’s water intake in the winter, you need to be more vigilant in the summer months.

  1. Access to fresh water at all times

There should never be a time where your pet doesn’t have access to fresh water, and no the toilet doesn’t count.  If you leave for an extended amount of time, make sure there is plenty of water available.  A Petmate Replendish Waterer provides a continuous flow of filtered water at any time.   The Replendish comes with charcoal filter packs that remove waterborne pathogens.  Filters should be replaced every 6-8 weeks for the proper filtration.

If you plan on spending time with your pet in your backyard make sure they have access to water outside that isn’t a pool.  Buying a Replendish Waterers 2-pack will give you a discounted rate and keeps you from having to move the water bowl in-and-out.

Remember to wash your pet’s bowls frequently so bacteria doesn’t grow.

  1. Bring water with you

If you’re on the go don’t forget to take water with you.  Taking a long car ride? Stop for frequent water and potty breaks.  Heading the park for a day of fetch? Don’t forget a travel bottle for Fido! If you are thirsty, chances are your pet is too. Travel water bowls are compact and easy to carry around.

  1. Provide a place to cool off

Pet’s get hot! Provide them with a shady spot where they cool down.  Getting a Gen7Pets Cool Air Cot will give them a comfortable spot to rest while staying off the hot concrete.

  1. Add water to your pet’s food

Humans get a lot of water intake by the food we eat, but the food your animals eat don’t have nearly as much.  Especially if your animals are eating dry kibble! If you suspect that your pet needs a little more water try adding a little water to their dry food or incorporate more wet food into their diet.

Keep your pet’s hydrated and happy by following these tips!
